There's nothing random about the main attack as this seems to imply. If you're close enough to an enemy the little lightning bolt you fire will immediately lock on and hit the nearest one. If you aren't, hitting the attack button will just have it fizzle out in a random direction. It's extremely simple; you don't even need a directional input.
